TINKERTOY — frequently asked questions

What exactly is Tinkertoy?

Tinkertoy is the classic American construction toy invented in 1914: wooden or sturdy plastic rods that snap into round spools and connectors, letting kids build windmills, cars, towers, robots and anything else they can imagine.

Are these genuine Tinkertoy products?

Yes. Every set in our range is a genuine TINKERTOY product manufactured under licence by Basic Fun, the current maker of the brand. We do not list imitations or compatible clones.

What age are Tinkertoy sets for?

The manufacturer recommends ages 3 and up. The pieces are large, chunky and easy to grip — designed specifically for small hands. As always, check the age label on the box.

What is the difference between the tins and the boxed sets?

The Retro Tins (50, 85 or 100 pieces) come in collectible keepsake canisters styled after the original packaging — great for gifting and storage. The boxed sets are bigger: the 30 Model Super Building Set has 200 pieces, and the Classic Jumbo Set features real wood parts.

Are the pieces wood or plastic?

It depends on the set. The Classic Jumbo Set is made of 100% real wood (except the flags). The Retro Tins mix high-quality wood and sturdy plastic, and the 30 Model Super Building Set uses durable, flexible plastic made in the USA.
